Just ask Bear & he'll tell you - "I've always been into
At age 16 he was the only one in high school riding a motorcycle
(a 1952 panhead)
to class. A few years later, after owning a couple different bikes
and gaining alot
of riding experiences, Bear met his wife, Sharon. He then infected
her with his
love of all things Harley too. In 1978, they joined the Antique
Motorcycle Club of
America. At their first AMCA meet at 'Doc' Cleveland's farm in
actually traded her wedding ring for her bike - a 1962 Harley
which she still has. Bear worked on and sold parts for bikes in
the basement of
their apartment for a couple of years. Then the unexpected opportunity
to open his own store came up. So began "Bear's Bike &
Welding" at 415 W. Main St
in Ravenna. Opening in April, 1980, the store's inventory was
sparse but soon the
stock of new & used Harley parts grew, and the store's reputation
But after almost 4 years of Bear having his 'dream job' of working
everyday, tragedy struck. On January 21, 1984, a devastating fire
leveled the building
he rented and totally destroyed everything in it. Bear's Bike
was gone - along with a
vast collection of Harley parts & memorabilia that could never
So, Bear & Sharon moved on to other business ventures, but
still rode as much
as possible. Bear kept his love of Harleys going by rebuilding
old Panheads and
Knuckleheads and antique Linkert carburetors in his barn.
Then, 23 years after the fire, fate stepped in and the old historic
feed mill in Ravenna
came up for sale. As it happens, the building is directly across
the street from where
the old bike shop was located. So Bear & Sharon took the chance
and bought the
mill. Along with general manager, Tom 'Pops' Dohse, Bear remodeled
the store into
"Bear's Vintage Metalworks", which opened on March 12,
2007. Now here they are
full circle, back to their first business (& first love) of
selling new & used parts and
accessories for Harley Davidson® Motorcycles. They cater to
Knuckles, Pans, Shovels,
Sportys, & Evos but can also order parts for newer bikes,
too. Bear's slogan of
"We Speak Harley Here!" is evident from the moment you
step in the door.
They extend an invitation to all their customers & friends
from the old days & all
their valued new customers, to "RIDE IN AND VISIT FOR AWHILE."
